CNI Superyachting Index

Over the past few years, every medium interested in luxury lifestyle, from magazines to financial papers to television documentaries has, at some point, tried to take a closer look into the yachting, or rather superyachting, industry, often with incorrect assumptions or erroneous information. This trend was certainly prompted by the growing number of large superyachts and, in turn, megayachts, built or under construction, as well as the public awareness of the industry resulting from a growing number of high-profile public figures making little or no secret about their latest luxury toys - think Roman Abramovich and his four-yacht fleet. Along with greater exposure came the underlying idea that yachting epitomises the ultimate in luxury living. A superyacht is more expensive than a piece of jewellery, real estate or art, as anyone involved with luxury yachts would know, but to anyone else the subject of costs and how the industry operates as a whole has long been kept a secret, a virtually taboo subject to discuss. For some time, the industry has been surrounded by an air of mystery to those  on the outside - a lifestyle seen from the distance, like a yacht on the horizon.

The purpose of the Super(Yachting) Index, which is an annual publication, is to bring to light the realities of a booming sector that has evolved from a relatively small niche and cottage industry into one of the world's strongest growing luxury markets. It is based upon documentation from a variety of sources, all publicly available, as well as upon Camper & Nicholsons International's own data and analysis of internal business information. The Index also casts more light into the practices of the industry, and hopefully helps not only understand what superyachting is about, but also clarifies some of the myths associated with it.
