Fiji & Micronesia

One of the principal island groups, Fiji comprises more than 300 islands (mostly created by volcanic activity over millennia) split between nine island regions. Spend a few days ashore, dividing your time between hiking up tropical mountains, kayaking and rafting through the Namosi Highlands and visiting the vibrant cities, which include Suva, the capital, where colourful markets sit alongside colonial architecture. While you’re there, take a tour of the botanical gardens and Fiji Museum for an insight into the region’s culture, history and lifestyle.

Vanua Levu is the second largest island in the group and is stunningly beautiful, as is Taveuni, which has earned itself the nickname ‘garden island of Fiji’ thanks to its lush vegetation, tropical flora and mountains. Wander through verdant forests and tick off sightings of rare and colourful bird species in the Kadavu islands, swim in the blue lagoons and stroll along white sand beaches in the Yasawu islands before steering a course for the idyllic desert islands of Vatulele. The islands play host to a luxury resort of the same name, set amid a rugged volcanic backdrop it has gained world accolades since its opening in 1990.

The thousands of islands that make up Micronesia are grouped into four states – Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap that are scattered over a huge ocean expanse. Considered to be some of the safest places in the world, each island is rich in tradition, history and culture, with spectacularly beautiful scenery to boost. Immerse yourself in the fascinating underwater worlds of haunting shipwrecks and colourful coral reefs, trek through the central mountains of the capital city Pohnpei with sparkling waterfalls and lush rainforests and discover the ancient ruins of Nan Madol on an itinerary in the cruising grounds of one of the world’s best kept secrets.
