2013 Palma Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show Roundup

6th May 2013

Celebrating its 30th anniversary and attended by the Crown Prince of Spain, Felipe, the Palma Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show made a firm comeback this year with over 37,000 attendees between 1st-5th May in the port of Palma.

In its milestone year, the show marked quite a sumptuous affair of firsts with Spanish Royalty paying a surprise visit for the first time in 30 years to present the Marcial Sanchez-Barcaiztegui Award and the show incorporating brokerage and charter for the very first time with outstanding results.

Among the 47 24m+ yachts on display at the longest quay in Palma, were Camper & Nicholsons 36.5m (119'7) Gin Tonic, the 33m (108'2) Deva, the 26.54m (87') Whisper VI, the 27.38m (89'8) Alhena, the 36m (129'9) Why Worry, the 27m (88'5) Oscar and the sailing yachts Philanderer 40m (131'), Iemanja 32m (104'11) and Victoria Estefania 25m (82') .

Arne Ploch, yacht broker at Camper & Nicholsons: “For the first time the Boat Show represents what yachting actually is in Mallorca - an industry that makes its living from the larger yachts.  We had a unique amount of sailing superyachts and, as the show was organised by an association of half a dozen brokers, we worked hard to achieve the aim we wanted – to sell boats.  We welcomed owners, clients and received two offers on one boat.  Everyone is in a very positive mood and this is certainly the beginning of something much bigger in Palma.  Next year we will bring more boats and expect more clients.  It is now a question of working hard to establish the show on the nautical calendar.”

The new format attracted an array of serious buyers from all corners of the world and the size of the yachts on display helped create an overwhelming interest, which promises to set the tone for the next few years to come.

Fine cars could be seen dotted around the show to include a brand new C-Type sponsored by Camper & Nicholsons in the 2013 Rally Isla Mallorca along with an impressive 500+ Hp AC Cobra, the very same one Jonathan Syrett from Camper & Nicholsons co-drove at the race held back in March.

Also on display was a very rare, one of two hand-built recreations of arguably the most famous, valuable and iconic racing car in the world - the Mercedes 300 SLR. Modelled on the 1955 Mille Miglia-winning '722' of Stirling Moss and Denis 'Jenks' Jenkinson, the beautifully crafted, all aluminium body with dimensions taken from the original car was quite a sight.
