Benjamin Toth crowned Young Designer of the Year
Camper & Nicholsons would like to congratulate Benjamin Toth, whose outstanding entry 'ReSeadence 50' - the conversion of a former 50m survey vessel into a yacht of ‘cutting edge design’ - led him to clinch this year's Young Designer of the Year Award.
An international audience of superyacht owners, designers and industry leaders celebrated excellence in yacht design at a glittering prize giving ceremony, held at the Monaco Opera House in Monaco on the 22nd June. During the evening the winner of the fifth annual Young Designer of the Year Award was announced. The award, sponsored by Camper & Nicholsons, considers students of design and recent graduates and in the past has been responsible for uncovering some of the industry’s most exciting and innovative creative talents. Entries were submitted by talented youngsters from countries including Bangladesh, The Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Italy, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Russia and the USA. The judges scrutinised each entry in meticulous detail and, after much deliberation, selected five outstanding finalists and the overall winner Benjamin Toth for his entry ReSeadence 50. Toth received a cash prize of €5,000 and, along with all finalists, had the rare opportunity to gain some first-hand industry experience at the kind invitation of Lürssen Shipyard. Camper & Nicholsons' Chairman, George Nicholson, presented Benjamin with his prestigious award on the night.
Benjamin Julian Toth, commented on his project and his experience of the award progress, "I want to thank Camper & Nicholsons and Boat International Media for supporting young designers. I felt truly honored to be awarded with the Young Designer Award during the Showboats Design Awards in Monte Carlo. It was a pleasure to receive the golden Neptune for my project ReSeadence 50. The gala dinner that followed the awards was the perfect setting at which to meet the highest professionals in the industry in a relaxed setting. The contacts made will, no doubt, provide me with invaluable advice throughout my career. I thoroughly enjoyed creating my design ReSeadence 50. My aim was to stick to the original hull platform and to combine a classic and contemporary design in order to create an innovative approach towards the "up-cycling" trend of old structures. The overall design expression is inspired by a combination of modern architecture and the style of an explorer yacht. This reflects my background as an industrial designer with affectations towards high-class products and materials. I believe that the Young Designer Award encourages new talent in the industry. I certainly enjoyed working on the project and as a result am re-assured that the yacht industry is the area of design that I would like to pursue further as a career.”
As official sponsors of the evening, Camper & Nicholsons would like to congratulate all the finalists for the Young Designer of the Year Award 2012 for their exemplary efforts, including:
Alvaro Aparicio de Leon for project MaBulle
Sven Faustmann & Ricardo Pilguj for project Reach
Kyle Foster & Matthew Wilkinson for project MY50
Jim R Sluijter for project Summer
