C&NI Crew Talk: Managing the Millennials created a stir at the Antigua Yacht Show
At December’s Antigua Charter Yacht Show, there was a seminar everyone was talking about: The Camper & Nicholsons Crew Coach’s presentation on ‘Managing the Millennials’.
A topic that resonated with many crew and brokers alike, the presentation focused on effective management techniques for motivating younger crew, as well as how to get good longevity and retain their loyalty and interest.
As Alison Rentoul explained during the talk, Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) have different expectations of work, different motivators and different strengths to the preceding generations, and these differences sometimes result in miscommunications and misunderstandings with captains and senior crew.
Despite this, Millenials now make up the majority of yacht crew, so it is time to adapt in order to get the most out of the new generation of yacht crew, as managing them in the traditional style simply won’t work.
The talk was described as ‘enlightening’ and ‘inspiring’ by those who attended, and contained a wealth of information, statistics and facts that gave the audience considerable food for thought. For example a recent survey of Millennials revealed that 56% would refuse to work at a company that bans social media. Among other things, this means yacht Owners and Captains do need to think carefully about providing adequate internet access for crew if they want to retain the top personnel onboard their yachts.
Although some people have struggled with getting through to the younger generation of crew, as Alison explained, it’s important to acknowledge the Millennials have a tremendous amount to bring to the crew mess table. This is a group that is incredibly tech-savvy and likes to be connected to and inspired by those around them. By learning to speak their language and understanding their motivations, Captains can create the best teams they have ever had.
