Discover Newport this summer
Camper & Nicholsons Newport office is now open for the summer. A hive of activity during the summer months, Newport offers a fantastic mix of beautiful scenery, culture and entertainment. With so much on offer it has established itself as a popular destination from which to begin a New England charter. Speak to your Camper & Nicholsons charter broker to discover more about what Newport has on offer this summer.
Considered by many to be the charismatic heart of New England, Newport has a lively downtown waterfront, three vineyards, the famous Gilded Age mansions, once owned by the likes of the Vanderbilts and Astors, wonderful coastal scenery and great restaurants. Barbara Dawson, Camper & Nicholsons Senior Charter Broker, is an authority on the area. “The entire Bannister's Wharf is Newport's most famous. It’s safe to say the way in which The Clarke Cook House (known as ‘The Candy Store’) prepares its New England lobster, striped bass, swordfish and tuna is extraordinary – and its Clam Chowder has been voted one of the best in New England.”
Also worth of note is the The Spiced Pear restaurant at the Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport, where it enjoys a particularly inspired oceanfront setting with its outdoor terrace cooled by the ocean breeze. Dine in the restaurant, or reserve one of its Ultimate Romance Private Dinners with six courses, wine pairings for each course, a dozen roses, a table decorated with rose petals and candles, home-made chocolates to take back to the yacht with you, and your choice of music. Dishes at the Spiced Pear may include wild Burgundy escargot with asparagus, fricasseé of organic mushrooms and sauce marsala, a whole Maine lobster, and a guava Bavarian cream.
On Newport’s famous Ocean Drive at the Castle Hill Inn & Resort there are numerous venues to dine in, including The Ocean Room with a fireplace and oriental rugs, and The Agassiz Room, Newport Room, and The Sunset Room overlooking Narragansett Bay. A Sunday brunch with live Jazz and sweeping lawns reaching down to the bay also makes for an exceptional occasion. Native and seasonal menus feature local fish and fresh produce from Maine to Chesapeake and the wine list features over 500 choices.
The Beach Plum Inn Restaurant atop Menemsha Harbor (a 300-year old fishing village) on Martha’s Vineyard has panoramic views from every table – as you dine you can gaze at the passing yachts, ocean waves and setting sun. The award-winning regional cuisine is presented with flair by executive chef James McDonough, and you’ll find plenty of fresh, native Atlantic seafood and aged beef. Begin, perhaps, with the likes of garbanzo bean, cilantro and roasted golden pepper cakes, followed by pan-seared hazelnut crusted halibut or grilled filet mignon with Hudson Valley foie gras.
Newport's newest neighborhood favourite is Stoneacre Pantry, which is a farm to table restaurant that focuses on the sustainability and relationship with the local environment. The Boat House at nearby Tiverton has beautiful waterfront views and a tasty brunch menu.
