Get into position for a great job this season
Camper & Nicholsons crew placement agent Sarah Laty talks about getting things in order for the summer season in order to avoid missing out.
It feels as though the summer season gets started earlier and earlier each year. We have only just opened the diary onto February and the Camper & Nicholsons crew department has been buzzing for weeks already. There are not a lot of crew wandering the streets, but that does not mean things are not happening behind the scenes. I am not saying it is time for you all to pack your bags and head over to Antibes. After all, it is still cold here. But if you are going to be looking for work next season, it is time to start getting a few things in order.
As I am sure you are tired of hearing, due to MLC 2006 legislation, we as compliant crew agents are required to have copies of certain documents in hand before we can submit you for available positions. This includes, at a very minimum, your seafarer’s medical certificate and your STCW95 basic training. Now is the time to check those expiration dates to make sure nothing needs to be renewed before spring is upon us. This is also the time to look into any new courses you might need, thanks to new requirements. Ships' Cook anyone? Or how about your Ship’s Security module? Not having these key certificates when the season starts could put you at a huge disadvantage.
Even if you are still employed or still spending some time with friends and family, take the time to reconnect with us and let us know what your plans are. Where are you and when will you be available? Update your CV and other documents so that you are all set to go when the jobs start falling, and be sure to check our Facebook page for regular listings. We already have Captains contacting us, hoping to get crewed up ahead of time. They might not want to consider candidates overseas, but at the moment they do not really have a choice! We also have positions starting in a few months, so it pays to get in touch early. If you wait until March or April, after the streets of Antibes are flooded with crew, competition will be much fiercer.
And if you do happen to be here or are just passing through, even better. Stop by and get the update out of the way. Avoid the lines that will surely be there later. We like a head start as much as you do.
