Mind the gap: managing the millenials
Alison Rentoul, the Camper & Nicholsons Crew Coach, will be delivering a seminar titled ‘Managing the Millenials’ at the Antigua Charter Yacht Show this year. Held at 8.50am on Wednesday 10th December, this discussion will cover how Captains can get the best out of their young crew to create an effective and united team with a positive and energetic outlook.
The generation known as ‘Millenials’, (people born between 1980 and 2000), make up the majority of new and junior yacht crew, and the generation gap between current leaders and the leaders of tomorrow can sometimes lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings. This tech savvy and sociable generation have different expectations of work and life than the generation before them, and these different perspectives require a very different management approach in order to properly engage with them and bring out their full potential.
As our Crew Coach will explain, it’s important to acknowledge the younger generation have a tremendous amount to bring to the crew mess table. By learning to speak their language and understanding their motivations, Captains can create the best teams they have ever had. In harnessing the enthusiasm and skills of this bright, confident and positive generation, captains can develop a positive future for their crew and the wider yachting industry.
So what motivates the Millenials and how can you tap into those drivers? How do you get good longevity from them and what are some tips to retain their loyalty and interest?
If you will be at the Antigua Yacht Show next week, make sure you attend Alison Rentoul’s talk to learn about what makes the next generation of yacht crew tick and how to get the absolute best out of them.
