The magnificent 77.4 metre Legend hits the water
Born out of demand from more intrepid travellers, the magnificent 77.4 metre Legend pushes the boundaries of exploration and unlocks the Polar regions to adventurous superyacht charterers.
Emerging from the Icon Yachts shipyard to display her extensive rebuild, Legend had already been transformed into an explorer superyacht by her previous owner and has been a highly successful charter yacht for a number of years. Not only was Legend built by a quality Dutch shipyard, she was originally built as a Soviet military A Class 1 icebreaker in the 1970’s – the highest rating for an ice-classed ship.
Above the waterline Legend is a superyacht with all the usual trimmings, but below the waterline she is able to navigate through ice-covered waters and frozen seas – opening up the spectacular Polar regions to adventurous charterers looking for something different from their luxury vacation.
“I wanted to create a vessel that could go anywhere in the world, but also provide the luxuries that have become standard in the superyacht industry,” says Owner Jan Verkerk.
The shape of the hull is optimised for navigating through iceberg-strewn waters while her 4-metre diameter propeller generates enough torque to push her bow up onto the ice. A 50mm thick solid steel block ‘ice knife’ above the propeller cuts ice like a sword before it reaches the hull or propeller.
Everything except the hull and main engines have been changed. Working with Icon Yachts and Diana Yacht Design, owner Jan Verkerk has literally rebuilt the vessel, including a 3.6 metre extension to her stern. The rebuild also involved the creation of additional deck spaces in order to offer areas for relaxation, as well as crane equipment for the vast array of water toys, including a luxurious submarine for underwater exploration, and a fully-classified helicopter deck. She also boasts an outstanding new swim platform and large swimming pool / Jacuzzi.
Her re-styled interior décor is by Thom Beerens and offers spacious accommodation for up to 26 guests, including a vast master suite. Her large formal dining area and bar are ideal for social gatherings whilst cruising the Poles, and have a fitness area, movie theatre, medical suite and other outstanding facilities.
